BLUFFING THE BABY
''The Corbomite Maneuver,'' Star Trek: The Original Series (1966)
There's always the chance a Starfleet captain might be tested by an omnipotent baby. Balok (the finest role of Clint Howard's career) conducts his people's first contact with the Federation by testing how Kirk would react to intimidation, even using a dummy, Wizard of Oz-style, to appear more threatening. Kirk calls Balok's bluff and raises him a ''corbomite device'' an entirely fictional weapon that could deflect enemy fire back onto an attacker. Mighty impressed, the space baby invites Kirk over for a drink in his decadent, lace-covered throne room/pleasure palace.
