DOUBT
John Patrick Shanley's first film as a director since his lovely, life-affirming fairy tale Joe Versus the Volcano 18 years ago couldn't be more different. An adaptation of his Tony-winning 2004 play of the same name, Doubt is a searing morality tale set in a Bronx Catholic school about a nun (Meryl Streep) who suspects a parish priest (Philip Seymour Hoffman) of sexually abusing the school's only black student. In another about-face, it'll be refreshing to see Streep go for Oscar nom No. 15 after seeing her clad in denim overalls crooning ABBA hits in Mamma Mia! earlier this year.
