9. DEAD SPACE

Gears of War 2, Fallout 3, Metal Gear Solid 4. All stunning. Their considerable virtues are the same: eye-candy graphics, taut suspense, wicked wit, and die! die! die! visceral thrills. But beating its bleak brethren for my affection is Dead Space, a don't-play-it-at-night mutant-zombies-in-space gorefest. You gotta love a game whose goal is strategic dismemberment.
