2. LITTLEBIGPLANET
Sony Computer Entertainment Europe
It was a good year to play God. Spore aspired to turn evolution into a game; the result was a not-quite-there-yet gem. But LittleBigPlanet (exclusive to PlayStation 3) was a masterpiece of more humble intentions, deep imagination, and radical implications. The hero, Sackboy, is a customizable toy-creature-thingy through whom a myriad of gorgeous gonzo levels can be explored or transformed. Better yet, LBP is empowering; it gives players the tools to craft their own idiosyncratic environments and share them online, thus turning personal expression into the means for creating community.
