1. WII FIT
Nintendo
2008 was the year that proved definitively, and sometimes ridiculously, that anything can be made into a videogame. Wii Fit more than embodies this trend it redeems it. Turning couch potatoes into budding exercise nerds by adapting the sweaty business of jogging and hula hooping into risk/reward, winner/loser videogame narrative? This is an infinite good! With respect to Dead Space, the most terrifying development in videogames this year is surely Wii Fit's controversial body mass index calculator, in which players must (gulp) be weighed. Overweight? The game tells you so (but gently), and then boing! your onscreen Mii grows a potbelly. Rude! But you laugh. Wii Fit good-natured and good for you feels like a game changer, both in technology and gameplay; it expands the notion of what a videogame can be.
