PAUL NEWMAN
THE ROAD TO PERDITION (2002)
FOND FAREWELL: Yes, Newman stole scenes in HBO's Empire Falls and voiced the old-school racer Doc Hudson in Pixar's Cars, but his final up-there-on-the-big-screen performance was as the grandfatherly Irish crime boss in Sam Mendes' mob thriller. It's a ferocious performance, in which Newman masks a mountain of evil and guilt behind those icy baby blues.
