GOTHIC (1986)
The title surely says it all in Ken Russell's atmospheric, opium-haze period piece about the dark and stormy night when British writer Mary Shelley created her famous monster tale, Frankenstein. As Shelley, Richardson deftly segues from fragile hysteria to searing wit and intelligence. A great performance in a strange, strange film. Chris Nashawaty
