In a bold move, Fringe jumped more than 20 years into the future the year 2036, to be precise for its last season. The Observers have pulled a cruel Terra Nova: Transhuman supermen from the 26th century, they've abandoned their time period due to environmental calamity in order to conquer and colonize our century. They think of their genetic predecessors as mere animals, but allow human beings at least the illusion of freedom, and offer the possibly disingenuous promise of a safe, secure future. ''I loved the idea of propaganda playing a role in how the Observers rule,'' says Wyman. ''Everything is okay! Everything is exactly as it should be! Don't worry! Dad is driving! You're simply following your own destiny! There is no reason to resist...because resistance is futile, as a great man once said.'' (Note: That great man would be the Observers sci-fi descendants, The Borg.)
