Secret Agent Man
The first time that director Roland Emmerich tangled with the White House on screen, well, we all know how that ended. ''Famously, I blew it up in Independence Day,'' Emmerich says with a workaday shrug that he's entitled to after a two-decade reign as Hollywood's premier blower-up-of-things (see: The Day After Tomorrow, 2012). But in White House Down (out June 28), the director has a more insidious plan for the executive mansion: It's invaded by mercenaries, putting the Commander-in-Chief (Jamie Foxx) on the run in his own house with only an aspiring Secret Service agent (Channing Tatum) for protection.
Channing Tatum stars as John Cale, a Capitol police officer trying to land a job with the Secret Service to, in part, impress his daughter (Joey King). Right after his interview, the White House falls under siege — and Cale ends up protecting the nation's most valuable civil servant. Tatum jumped at the chance to do some of his own stunts in the movie. ''I did this nine-foot flop with no wires onto a glass roof,'' he says. ''It hurt...but it was such an adrenaline spike.'' —Adam Markovitz
