RED's New Dawn

There are spies with hard hearts and haunted eyes — the guys you call when the sky is falling — and then there are the loony spooks of RED 2 (out Aug. 2), who exist somewhere between Ian Fleming and Monty Python. ''All of those great Bond and Bourne movies you've seen, we go into that world and have those kind of set pieces. It's just our characters that are completely ludicrous,'' says director Dean Parisot (Galaxy Quest). The title is an acronym — it's the term for CIA pensioners considered ''Retired, Extremely Dangerous'' — and the cast was built for a world-class wink, with Mary-Louise Parker (left), Bruce Willis (center), John Malkovich (right), and franchise newcomer Anthony Hopkins. But Parisot says Helen Mirren may steal the show again. ''She is genius and unbelievably sexy — and somehow unbelievably macho.'' —Geoff Boucher
