Iron Man 3
Is Iron Man more than just a guy in a suit? In the third solo outing for billionaire good guy Tony Stark, he may actually become one with his armor. The exclusive concept image above, which Marvel Studios will be giving out at Comic-Con, shows Robert Downey Jr.'s character surrounded by unknown attackers, with only his arm and leg encased in armor. What's happening here? The context isn't immediately clear (and Marvel isn't talking), but the image matches the way Stark's armor attaches to him in the 2005-06 comic-book series, Iron Man: Extremis. The title refers to a nanotech serum that allows humans to bond to metal, becoming ''biological combat machines.'' It builds a control sheath into his body, which draws the armor to him by mental command. Judging by Stark's look of surprise, this may be the first test of that. Downey does tell EW that he wants to radically challenge Stark's identity, rather than just have him battle another bad guy. ''These things tend to, in Act 3, really become about the same old things. So let's really flip that,'' he says. ''I feel like I don't know where you go after Iron Man 3. Leave it all on the field, you know?'' A little thing called The Avengers 2 makes us think Tony will be just fine. (Marvel, May 3, 2013) Anthony Breznican
