And now, the ol' switcheroo. Earlier this year, EW asked celebs (including David Spade, John Mayer, and Joey Fatone) to participate in our second annual Candid Hollywood. That is, we asked the stars to get behind the camera and show us what they did on their summer vacations. For our famous crop of amateurs, though, the perfect snap demanded not just a good eye but a caring heart. Armed with a cool camera -- Canon's PowerShot S200 Digital Elph, provided by the company -- they chronicled their days to raise money for the 52nd Street Project.
Founded in 1981, the nonprofit organization takes underprivileged New York City kids ages 9–18 and brings them together with theater professionals (like Frances McDormand and Billy Crudup) to write and perform free shows at Off Broadway theaters. ''We use theater as a means of increasing self-esteem,'' says John Sheehy, 52nd Street's director of development and marketing. ''The award of receiving applause and laughter is immediate and visceral.''
To show our appreciation to the artists who gave so generously, EW will offer prints of select photos on these pages; a portion of the proceeds will go to the 52nd Street Project.
