Todd Phillips has a theory about franchises that reach No. 3. ''They all seem to get darker as they go on,'' says the director. But when it comes to the final installment in the men-behaving-badly comedy trilogy, darker isn't exactly the right word: ''It's more like f---ed up.''
Fast & Furious 6
If you're an American with a TV set, you know what he's talking about: the airplane-crashing-to-the-ground-while-a-car-crashes-out-of-the-airplane scene that climaxed the Fast & Furious 6 Super Bowl teaser. Building on the franchise-best gross of 2011's Fast Five, the new film takes the series even further from its street-racing roots, as Dominic Toretto (Vin Diesel) leads his crew into vehicular battle with ex-special-ops rogue Owen Shaw.
Before Midnight
Summer is pretty much reserved for franchise films. Mercifully, there's one this season that doesn't feature men in tights, bachelor-party blackouts, or Smurfs. Its main characters are two normal people just talking...and talking. In a good way.
