''Gladiator'' and ''Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon'' were the big winners at the 73rd Annual Academy Awards last night, winning 9 trophies between them. Ridley Scott's Roman Empire drama picked up five statuettes for best picture, actor, costume design, sound, and visual effects. Ang Lee's Taiwanese martial arts epic won four awards, for best foreign film, cinematography, art direction, and score. Front runners Russell Crowe and Julia Roberts walked away with lead acting awards, each gushing lengthy acceptance speeches -- ''I want to thank everyone I've ever met,'' Roberts said.
Among the few surprises of the ceremony were Steven Soderbergh's best direction win for ''Traffic,'' bucking the traditional odds where double nominees (Soderbergh was also up for ''Erin Brockovich'') cancel themselves out. Supporting actress Marcia Gay Harden enjoyed an unexpected win for ''Pollock,'' defeating favored second generation nominee Kate Hudson for ''Almost Famous,'' Cameron Crowe's autobiographical coming of age story (for which the writer-director earned a best original screenplay award). But, to paraphrase host Steve Martin, we wouldn't want anyone to think of this as a competition.
