The scoop on ''Night Stalker'' | 135749__nightstalker_l
UNION AND TOWNSEND
NIGHT STALKER: Danny Feld

CONCEPT Reporter Carl Kolchak (Stuart Townsend) investigates the eerie murder of his wife and uncovers a web of supernatural creepiness.

THE SCOOP While it's based on the 1974-75 cult TV series, Stalker is equally reminiscent of The X-Files — no coincidence, since that's the show from which exec producer Frank Spotnitz hails. Townsend hopes, however, that Stalker will chart new territory when it comes to Kolchak's relationship with his sparring partner, fellow journalist Perri Reed (Gabrielle Union). ''It's not a Scully and Mulder — we're not gonna be as dry as that, I hope to God.'' In addition to cases involving mummified bodies, Spotnitz promotes another enticing angle: ''There's this whole question about whether your hero is in fact a hero. Did he or did he not kill his wife?''

BOTTOM LINE The premise is intriguing as hell, even if the pilot was overpacked (spooky canines, murder flashbacks — and that mysterious mark on Kolchak's wrist). With its charismatic stars and Spotnitz's résumé, we'll keep watching.
