'Star Trek' Meets 'Star Wars': Artists' Renderings

With J.J. Abrams set to direct the revival of George Lucas' franchise, he becomes a human link between a galaxy far far away and the Starship Enterprise. We asked fan-artists to try to express the excitement and possibilities on the horizon; here are six to start, with more on the way. The gallery is open!

J.J. Abrams is boldly going where George Lucas has gone before? Yes, it's true, the rumors that were flying everywhere at warp speed (or were they making the jump to hyperspace?) and EW confirmed it Thursday with Abrams himself: During a lunch interview on Thursday the commander of cinema's Starfleet said he is beaming over to the universe where the Jedi roam. What's next, Peter Jackson taking over as headmaster of Hogwarts?

The two biggest brands in deep-space adventure are not supposed to mix, except on YouTube or San Diego bus benches when Comic-Con International comes to town in July. To capture some of excitement, angst, confusion, intrigue and recrimination now churning up two different universes, EW invited some artists to give us a visual commentary on the news and the possibilities ahead. As for us, there's one logical thing left to say: May the Force live long and prosper.

This one, which could be called ''Star Wars on deck,'' is from Kevin Lingenfelser, a compositing supervisor at Digital Domain and has worked on visual effects for more than 100 feature films. You can find out more about his work at kevinlingenfelser.com
