The Brink premiere react: Great cast can't overcome unfunny satire

It’s tough not to feel at least some level of disappointment after watching The Brink’s premiere. With such a talented cast on screen and a relatively unique plot and structure for a comedy, HBO’s new political satire has a lot going for it. Unfortunately, its attempts to make all of that satire actually funny fail as often as Tim Robbins’ Walter Larson asks for a drink in the premiere.

Watch the first teaser for HBO's The Brink starring Jack Black

“That’s no gay pride parade,” are the first words we hear uttered by Jack Black’s character Alex Talbot while driven through the restless streets of Islamabad, Pakistan. HBO released a teaser for its new comedy The Brink on Friday, which also stars Tim Robbins and Pablo Schreiber. The one-minute clip also depicts Robbins—playing U.S. Secretary of State Walter Larson—in a compromising bedroom situation and Schreiber’s Zeke Tilson (excellent name) profanely expressing his excitement to be conferenced in with POTUS.

Jon Stewart’s Daily Show successor, Trevor Noah, faced backlash Tuesday after the internet discovered some of his old tweets. But Daily Show correspondent Aasif Mandvi doesn’t think it’s such a big deal: “I think it’s much ado about nothing, first of all,” he said at a LinkedIn Discussion Series event Tuesday, according to Mediaite.
