After a long Emmy nomination process, it’s time to let loose — by watching all the 2016 nominees for Outstanding Choreography. Dance had a big year on television: America’s Best Dance Crew returned to the stage as So You Think You Can Dance and Dancing with the Stars continued to break ground. But one of this year’s choreography nominees comes from outside the reality competition format — The CW’s Crazy Ex-Girlfriend steps into the spotlight with three nods.
After six episodes, five eliminated all-star crews, four successful attempts by security to keep Lil’ Mama from crashing the set, three judges with constantly changing titles (everybody’s a choreographer!), and two shirts made entirely of glitter… one ABDC all-star champion was finally crowned. Why did it happen Saturday night instead of Sunday before the VMA, where this “road to the VMAs” was presumably leading to all along? I have no idea.
I usually leave episodes of ABDC feeling a little exhaustion (secondary, of course), but I never expected an episode with such a clumsy pun in the title to leave me quite so emotionally taxed. Whoo—there were tears! From T-Pain. A lot of them!
If you found yourself not totally understanding what the theme of tonight’s ABDC episode entailed, you were not alone—the five remaining all-star crews were also a little perplexed. After all, it’s pretty confusing when the challenge is supposed to be based on “VMA Fashion” but then host Jason Dundas says, “But this challenge is not about style or what the crews are wearing.”
The ABDC host with America’s Best Australian Accent is back for a second week and he’s telling us what we already know: That he’s still not Mario Lopez (but Jason Dundas’ jawline is still finely chiseled) and this isn’t just your average season of America’s Best Dance Crew. No, this is ABDC resurrected from the pits of cancellation purgatory, blazing a hip-hop path toward the VMAs with the best crews of ABDC Past battling it out to claim that title for Present and Future, as well.
Did you think this day would come? Did you ever dream you’d see the return of ABDC to your television screen? Remember when it was called by its full name, Randy Jackson Presents: America’s Best Dance Crew? Remember when Randy Jackson was a selling point?!
MTV is shutting down America’s Best Dance Crew.
Randy Jackson’s long-running competition series is coming to an end on the network. MTV released this statement to EW: “We are grateful to Randy Jackson and Warner Horizon for having brought our audience seven amazing seasons of dance with ABDC, and look forward to more successful and dynamic entertaining collaborations in the future.”
On the May 30 episode of America’s Best Dance Crew, the four teams still left in the competition take on the music of the Party Rockers themselves – LMFAO. In an exclusive clip, all the crews get in the spirit by shufflin’ in homage to the chart-topping Superstars. As is only right, there are animal prints and neon accents aplenty. To find out what song gets things party rockin’, check out the clip below.
Seven seasons into judging America’s Best Dance Crew, JC Chasez (pictured on the left with series creator Randy Jackson) likes to “go into it fresh every week.” It’s easier said than done with dozens of dance crews floating around in the former NSYNC member’s head at any given time. Tonight’s performances of Drake songs will likely go a long way toward a little mental spring cleaning, though.
