A who’s who of character-actor wild cards (John Malkovich, Billy Bob Thornton, Bruce Dern) is wasted in this dreary redneck noir about a small Montana town with a body-count problem. An inexpressive Liam Hemsworth doesn’t help matters as a blue-collar hunk itching to leave the farm for the bright lights of Butte with his girlfriend (Teresa Palmer). TV director Matt Shakman (It’s Always Sunny in Philadelphia) is clearly going for a dark and bloody Fargo-style crime thriller, but the biggest crime in the film is just how derivative it all feels.
