Why is Halloween a box office killer?

Holiday weekends typically mean higher than average box office grosses for prospective mainstream releases; Christmas and Thanksgiving can often shape weak debuts into successful, sequel-spawning hits (take 2012’s Jack Reacher, which opened to $15 million Dec. 21, and went on to finish its theatrical run with $80 million, for example). But as of late, movie studios are grappling with more tricks than treats when it comes to reaping Halloween box office totals.

Jeff Daniels reprises Will McAvoy from The Newsroom to talk Trump, Clinton

What kind of day has it been? The kind where Jeff Daniels is asked to resurrect his character from The Newsroom to talk about the 2016 presidential election.

In a video produced by Bloomberg Television for With All Due Respect with hosts Mark Halperin and John Heilemann, Daniels embodied News Night anchor Will McAvoy to recreate his first scene as the character and pontificate on the expected presidential battle between Hillary Clinton and Donald Trump.

Jeff Daniels and Stephen Colbert hosted a public access show

Last summer, Stephen Colbert filled in as host for a public access show in Monroe, Michigan, and interviewed rapper Eminem, a Michigan native. On Friday night’s The Late Show, Colbert teamed up with another Michigander — The Divergent Series: Allegiant star Jeff Daniels — for Community Calendar, a public access show spoof based on Daniels’ hometown of Chelsea, Michigan, where he has lived for 30 years.

Blackbird: EW stage review

In the fluorescent-light-stricken confines of a drab office break room, a man in his mid-50s (Jeff Daniels) is poked and prodded and made to feel awful by a woman half his age, named Una (Michelle Williams), who has arrived unexpectedly at his workplace. We never find out what his job is there, though she sneers that he might be the janitor because of his compulsion to pick up trash. We do figure out early on, however, that his name is Ray, but he now goes by Peter.

Jeff Daniels reprises Newsroom, Dumb and Dumber characters on The Late Late Show

We’ve seen Jeff Daniels play a police officer, a Civil War colonel, a novelist, a newsman, and a fool. But never have we witnessed the actor play any of these roles simultaneously.

On Tuesday night’s episode of The Late Late Show, the prolific actor reprised his role as sincere newsman Will McAvoy from The Newsroom and immature clown Harry Dunne from Dumb and Dumber.
