Well, thankfully, I’m not reading Jacqueline Susann. I’m in the middle of two things, How to Make an American Quilt-a novel by Whitney Otto-and Salman Rushdie’s Midnight’s Children. It’s about India. I was in the Peace Corps for two years, so I know about that part of the world, and the book is very accurate. As for the Otto, I’ve spent five years writing about these real women, so it’s wonderful to read evocative fiction about women. I have plenty of time to read for pleasure now, but for the five years while I was writing my book I didn’t. I read so many books about Catholics my wife thought I was studying for the priesthood.
