The war against Samaritan has finally come to an end. In Person of Interest’s emotional series finale, Team Machine finally triumphed over the evil A.I. threatening to take over the world. Even though Team Machine lost one of its own in the ultimate battle, the hour ended on a very hopeful note — which was rather surprising for such a cynical series, but welcomed and very much earned.

When we last saw Harold Finch, he had just stolen Ice-9, a lethal computer virus with the ability to basically destroy the Internet. He planned on using it to destroy Samaritan, but deploying the virus would also lead to tons of collateral damage, including the death of The Machine. Is defeating Samaritan worth the price? That’s one of several questions asked in tonight’s penultimate episode, where Person of Interest explores what a world would look like without The Machine.

Person of Interest fans might want to grab a box of tissues. After giving a sneak peek of next Tuesday’s penultimate episode during the ATX TV festival in Austin, Texas on Friday, creator Jonathan Nolan and Greg Plageman teased the CBS series’ dramatic finale airing June 21.
The numbers never stop coming, not even when Team Machine has to grieve.
“Synecdoche” picks up very soon after the events of the tragic 100th episode. Reese and Fusco are standing by Root’s graveside lamenting the fact that they can’t even give her a proper burial. Their conversation really reveals just how much Root, a.k.a. Coco Puffs, meant to them and how much they will miss her.

That’s definitely one way to celebrate 100 episodes! The landmark and adrenaline pumping hour, which was also a showcase episode for Michael Emerson, featured the death of two major characters. “The Day the World Went Away” is a culmination of several seasons worth of work and is definitely a game-changer for the show in more ways than one.
The final shot of tonight’s episode, which featured the entire team standing together for the first time in quite some time, might have been the most hopeful moment of the season so far. Up to now, the final season has been pretty dark. Thankfully, “Sotto Voce,” which is all about friendship and trust, lightens the mood a bit as we see two of our wayward Team Machine-mates work their way back into the fold. But, before we get to the chummy stuff, Person of Interest has to tie-up a loose end from the third season.
