The Queen celebrates birthday with cake from Great British Bake Off winner

Now there’s a cake fit for a queen. 

Queen Elizabeth II, who celebrates her 90th birthday on Thursday, sliced her way through a three-tiered, gold and purple cake baked by Nadiya Hussain, the 2015 winner of The Great British Bake Off (or as it’s know in the U.S., The Great British Baking Show), the uplifting, earnest competition show about bakers devoted to perfecting their art.

Netflix orders Queen Elizabeth II drama 'The Crown'

Netflix is adding some royalty to its original programming lineup in 2016.

Netflix has ordered a 10-episode first season of The Crown, telling the story of Queen Elizabeth II’s reign. Each season of the show (if it is picked up for more, of course), will follow a decade of the queen’s life, beginning in 1952 when she assumed the title and began working with Prime Minister Winston Churchill.

Kenneth Branagh knighted by Queen Elizabeth II

In an example of life imitating art, Kenneth Branagh, who’s played royalty in several films, was knighted by Queen Elizabeth II at Buckingham Palace last Friday, The Associated Press reports.

The Thor director, referring to the Queen’s Diamond Jubilee and the London Olympics, told the AP “it’s been a hell of a year for the U.K. and I feel very honored to be a tiny part of it.”
