Sometimes being a low-key storyteller gets mistaken for having a lack of ambition or polish. At least that’s what happened to writer-director Andrew Bujalski, who early on in his career was dismissively filed under the mumblecore branch of independent film. What he’s really been going after all these years, though, is realism—the stammering and sometimes awkward way real people communicate in real life. Sometimes his messy, matte-finish approach comes off brilliantly (2013’s Computer Chess), sometimes less so.
