Casting Net: Sofia Boutella in talks to be the new Mummy

  • The next generation’s Mummy might have been found. Sofia Boutella is negotiating to play the big bad in Universal’s resuscitation of the series. Tom Cruise has been in talks to head the modern-day story under Alex Kurtzman’s direction, from Jon Spaihts’ screenplay. The new movie is currently set for March 24, 2017.

  • Josh Hutcherson and Ben Kingsley are teaming up for a political thriller with a vindictive title. Backstabbing for Beginners, co-written by director Per Fly and Daniel Pyne, is based on Michael Soussan’s memoir. Hutcherson will play the Soussan character, a young new employee of U.N.’s Oil for Food program in the late ’90s. He begins doe-eyed, but learns the true workings of the system as he navigates the politics and watches his boss (Kingsley).

Casting Net: Ian McKellen joins Beauty and the Beast, Eddie Redmayne eyed for Harry Potter spinoff

  • Disney has cast the stately, sophisticated Ian McKellen to play the worrywart, tattletale clock Cogsworth, in its live-action remake of Beauty and the Beast. Production is set to begin later this year for a March 17, 2017 release. The actor is not the only Brit in the ever-growing cast that includes Dan Stevens as the Beast, Luke Evans as Gaston, Josh Gad as LeFou, and Emma Watson as the lovely Belle.
