The future according to the world of sci-fi is really appealing—if you’re a teenage boy.
In a wacky video for their new song, “These Aren’t the Droids,” singer Neko Case and her longtime collaborator Kelly Hogan slyly highlight the extent to which popular visions of the future are designed to appeal to teenage male fans. Case wears a Star Trek uniform and Princess Leia wig (probably just to make you angry about that combination), while Hogan sports a full-on Chewbacca costume. Ellie Kemper (The Office, Bridesmaids) also appears as a woman unfulfilled by her relationship with a Star Wars stormtrooper.
Case and Hogan’s complaint is a pretty common one, given that imaginary universes such as Star Wars tend to have very few prominent female characters (though recent casting news might push against this trend). Still, this is probably the first time growing “dudes with boobs” in tubes has been proposed as a solution.
The video appears on a comedy-music compliation titled 2776: A Millenium of American Asskickery, which benefits OneKid OneWorld and includes work from Patton Oswalt, Yo La Tengo, Ed Helms, Andrew W.K., Ira Glass, Aimee Mann, Reggie Watts, Will Forte, Margaret Cho, Ashanti, Will Arnett, Samantha Bee, Colbie Smulders, and many more.
