“It’s a lifestyle.” “It’s a religion.” That’s Rory (Alexis Bledel) and Lorelai (Lauren Graham) talking about The Donna Reed Show back in season 1 of Gilmore Girls. But it may as well apply to Gilmore fans today. And if you’re one of those people who’s been not-exactly-patiently waiting for nearly nine years to revisit Stars Hollow, set your calendar for later this year. The Connecticut crew is back together shooting four 90-minute Gilmore Girls movies for Netflix, and EW has your exclusive first look.
On the Warner Bros. soundstage one late February morning, it was as if not much had changed since Rory and Lorelai had that last cup of coffee over at Luke’s. Dinner at Casa Gilmore. A strong drink in hand. And a cast relieved to have been reunited by Amy Sherman-Palladino, who created the beloved series back in 2000.
After filming a scene alongside her TV mother Emily (Kelly Bishop), Graham said of the experience, “You know how you finish college and you’re a few years older and you’re like, ‘I wish I could go do this now ‘cause I would appreciate it so much more and understand it and get more out of it’? That’s the opportunity I have this with and I appreciate every day that I’m here.”
Though we wouldn’t dare spoil top-secret plot points, we did get intel on Lorelai and Luke (Scott Patterson), Rory and her career, and of course, Emily’s life as a widow. (Edward Hermann, who played Emily’s husband Richard Gilmore, died in 2014, though he’s honored throughout the movies.)
As for special guest stars (Sutton Foster! Mae Whitman!), plans for more movies, and some information about Sherman-Palladino’s now-legendary Four Final Words to the series? It’s all in the new issue of Entertainment Weekly, on newsstands Friday, or buy it here now. And don’t forget to subscribe for exclusive interviews and photos, only in EW.
